Summary
Abstract
During compound conditioning in which two or more cues are paired with an unconditioned stimulus (US), animals form associations between each cue and the US and associations between the cues (the latter of which are called within-compound associations). Most contemporary theories of associative learning assert that summation of cue–US associations drives negative mediation (e.g., blocking, overshadowing, and conditioned inhibition) because of their effects on the processing of the US representation. Using a computational modeling approach, we reviewed and simulated experiments that suggest that within-compound associations are necessary for cue interactions. A mathematical model that attributes all cue interactions to within-compound associations provided a better fit than a model that attributes negative mediation effects to variations in processing of the US. Overall, the results of this analysis suggest that within-compound associations are important for all cue interactions, including cue competition, conditioned inhibition, counteraction effects, retrospective revaluation, and second-order conditioning.
Within-compound associations: models and data
Pavlov (1927) discovered that both positive and negative mediation effects can occur when a target cue (X) is presented during training in conjunction with a nontarget cue (A). Positive mediation effects refer to situations in which the presence of A during training results in more excitatory behavioral control by X than if X was trained elementally. An example of positive mediation is second-order conditioning, which occurs when A–unconditioned stimulus (A–US) pairings (Phase 1) precede X–A pairings (Phase 2, which presumably establishes an X–A within-compound association), resulting in more excitatory conditioned responding to X than in a control condition lacking one or the other phase (Pavlov, 1927).

We argue that the propositional and link-based approaches to human contingency learning represent different levels of analysis because propositional reasoning requires a basis, which is plausibly provided by a link-based architecture. Moreover, in their attempt to compare two general classes of models (link-based and propositional), Mitchell et al. refer to only two generic models and ignore the large variety of different models within each class.

Sinus venosus defects are relatively uncommon forms of interatrial communication in which one of the caval veins has a biatrial connection, and partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections are the rule. The variety related to the inferior caval vein is much the rarer of the two forms, and here the defect is posterior and inferiorly placed. To determine whether an inferior sinus venosus defect could be identified preoperatively, we reviewed retrospectively the available echocardiograms and cineangiograms of the five patients with an inferior sinus venosus defect who underwent surgical repair between January 1983 and December 1991. A cross-sectional echocardiogram had been performed preoperatively in four of these patients, but the correct diagnosis had been made in only one case. Retrospective study, however, showed that the extent of the true atrial septum and the nature of the junction of the inferior caval vein with the atriums could be evaluated from the subcostal position in three of these four patients. Each of the three had an interatrial communication located posteriorly and inferiorly adjacent to the atrial connection of the inferior caval vein, along with abnormally connected right pulmonary veins. The oval fossa was intact and the coronary sinus was normal in all. Cardiac catheterization had been performed in three of the five patients. Anomalous return of right pulmonary veins was noted in each, and the posterior and inferior location of the interatrial communication was evident in two. An interatrial communication adjacent to the atrial connection of the inferior caval vein, along with anomalous connection of the right-sided pulmonary veins, are the diagnostic features of the inferior variety of sinus venosus defects. These features can be demonstrated by cross-sectional echocardiography from the subcostal position.

Biomechanical experiments on isolated hip joints have suggested that the transverse ligament acts as a bridle for the lunate articular surface of the acetabulum during load bearing, but there are inherent limitations in such studies because the specimens are fixed artificially to testing devices and there are no modifying influences of muscle pull. Further evidence is thus needed to substantiate the theory. Here we argue that if the horns of the lunate surface are forced apart under load, the ligament would straighten and become compressed against the femoral head. It would thus be expected to share some of the features of tendons and ligaments that wrap around bony pulleys and yet previous work has suggested that the transverse ligament is purely fibrous. Transverse ligaments were removed from 8 cadavers (aged 17–39 y) and fixed in 90% methanol. Cryosections were immunolabelled with antibodies against collagens (types I, II, III, VI), glycosaminoglycans (chondroitins 4 and 6 sulphate, dermatan sulphate, keratan sulphate) and proteoglycans (aggrecan, link protein, versican, tenascin). A small sesamoid fibrocartilage was consistently present in the centre of each transverse ligament, near its inner surface at the site where it faced the femoral head. Additionally, a more prominent enthesis fibrocartilage was found at both bony attachments. All fibrocartilage regions, in at least some specimens, labelled for type II collagen, chondroitin 6 sulphate, aggrecan and link protein, molecules more typically associated with articular cartilage. The results suggest that the ligament should be classed as containing a ‘moderately cartilaginous’ sesamoid fibrocartilage, adapted to withstanding compression. This supports the inferences that can be drawn from previous biomechanical studies. We cannot give any quantitative estimate of the levels of compression experienced. All that can be said is that the ligament occupies an intermediate position in the spectrum of fibrocartilaginous tissues. It is more cartilaginous than some wrap-around tendons at the wrist, but less cartilaginous than certain other wrap-around ligaments, e.g. the transverse ligament of the atlas.

The effects of feeding lipids protected against microbial degradation in the rumen, on the metabolism of β-carotene and cholesterol in the blood and milk of cows were studied. The diets fed to the cows consisted of a basal mixture of crushed oats and lucerne hay with a protected vitamin supplement containing α-tocopheryl acetate and β-carotene fed in conjunction with either (i) protected sunflower oil-seed rich in linoleic acid (PO), (ii) protected tallow (PT), or (iii) formaldehyde-treated casein (C) as a control. Diets PO and PT raised the concentrations of β-carotene and cholesterol in the blood plasma over that observed for diet C. Milk cholesterol concentrations were not affected by dietary supplements, but the level of β-carotene in milk of cows on diet PO showed a tendency to fall compared with milk from cows fed PT or C. The properties of the high density lipoprotein (HDLP) of the blood plasma which contained the β-carotene were affected by the PO diet. As a result of feeding this diet, the fatty-acid composition of the HDLP was altered and it emerged from a gel-filtration chromatographic column earlier than the control. This change in chromatographic behaviour was used as a measure of the effect of the diet, which, for some cows, was apparent long after the diet was changed. It is suggested that the altered lipid composition resulting from the PO diet affected the distribution of particle sizes of the HDLP and might interfere with the transfer of β-carotene from plasma to milk.
